Amazon Free App of the Day Review: X Construction

Over at Amazon’s Appstore, they give away a new and exciting Android app for free; every day. Today’s App of the Day is an endlessly frustrating game called X Construction. Players must build bridges to support a passing train; fail at this and you will cause the deaths of every passenger aboard the train.

Let’s take a look!

X Construction utilizes a really fun physics engine and offers some really neat creative options for players and gets you thinking about how to build your bridge the best to get this train from A to B.

Build bridges, not walls, with X Construction loaded on your Android (OS 2.1 or higher), and then send a train across your creation to see if it holds up under the pressure, or collapses into catastrophe. Representing a real-world twist on the addictive physics-based casual game genre, X Construction uses the materials and building principles of civil engineering as you try out new bridge designs and test their strength with fully loaded trains.

For each of the first 15 Crossing levels, you’ll be given a limited amount of supplies to build your bridge, and a limited number of foundation base-points to use as structural anchors. As you lay the girders, concrete and cables down with a touch and drag of your fingertip, you have control over the material’s length, to a point. And this is where the puzzling, exciting aspect of the game comes into play: simply placing girders in a random but eye-pleasing manner will likely result in a literal train wreck of a project.

Crossings

Crossings are kind of the bread and butter of X Construction, so to speak. In these levels, your task is simple; build a durable and safe bridge that a train can cross safely over. While that sounds pretty straightforward, sometimes getting your bridge to hold up to the weight of the train can require some real brain work.

On top of that, you don’t have an unlimited supply of building materials to work with so you may only have something like 10 struts to cross a reasonably large gap.

But maybe you prefer a bit more creativity and freedom? That’s where Free Build comes in!

Free Build

For me, personally, free build is the most fun I’ve had playing X Construction. Free Build basically gives you an unlimited supply of building materials and lets you go to town, letting your creativity come to light and your imagination go nuts.

This is an excellent way to build some concept models of bridges and see how they work out. If you’re satisfied with your design, you can jump back into the Crossing level you’re stuck on and re-build the design you created in Free Build.

This can be a really valuable asset when stuck on a particular crossing.

Overall

While the game is definitely fun to play, it takes some time to get used to how to effectively build bridges. Don’t be discouraged when your first few bridges collapse and the passengers on the train scream in terror; they really do, that’s not sarcasm.
