Amazon Free App of the Day: C25K Pro

C25K Pro is designed to convert your average couch potato into a 5-kilometer running machine; hence the acronym, which stands for Couch To Five Kilometers. The application also features Facebook integration so you can keep all of your friends and family up to date on your running or lack there of.

C25K is short for Couch to five kilometers. C25K Pro for your smartphone is designed to get just about anyone from being a couch potato to running either five kilometers or 30 minutes in just nine weeks.

Too many people have been deterred from running simply because they try starting off too fast and too far. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves. You should ease into your running program gradually, with the help of C25K Pro on your Android device.

Couch to five kilometers is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The C25K running plan from Cool Running is a great way to get someone who’s never run before to being a three-mile runner in nine weeks. It alternates running and walking, slowly getting the body accustomed to distance running. It times your workout, letting you know through audio clips when it’s time to switch your pace while listening to the music of your choice or podcasts you’ve downloaded onto your smartphone. For example, switch pace from walking to running, or from running to cooling down. Additionally, if you like C25K, there’s a follow up plan that will get you to 10K.

Amazon Free App of the Day: Zombie Rider

Zombie Rider is a side-scrolling racer with an undead twist. The game seems a bit repetitive from the reviews we’re reading, but we haven’t had a chance to spend some hands-on time with this one yet (read: Yankees vs Tigers, Game 4 going down). One thing we noticed, however, is that the Zombies bear a displeasing resemblance to the undead characters in PopCap Games’ Plants vs Zombies. Probably just a coincidence.

Zombie road kings–start your engines! Why kill zombies when you can join them in this 2-D, side-scrolling racing game for your Android device.

Rumor has it, an evil scientist created a cure for the zombie virus, and the human race is spreading like fleas. Get on your chopper, and motor your way crosscountry to the zombie sanctuary in Chicago. Zombies, come one, come all!

Navigate your reckless zombie using on-screen controls and your accelerometer. Ride like you’ve got nothing to live for because you’re already dead, and collect as many brains on the way. Brains cut seconds from your overall time, and get you further, faster. Now that’s using brain power.

Press the right side of the screen to accelerate, and the left side of the screen to brake or reverse. As you speed over hills, ramps, and other obstacles, you’ll launch your zombie in the air. Tilt the device to lean forward or backward. Lean extra far, and flip mid-air for a show-stopping trick, or just eat pavement. It’s not like it will hurt or anything.

Beginning in Los Angeles, gather the zombie gang and ride the historic Route 66 all the way to America’s Midway. Each level covers some ground on the map and moves you closer to the zombie sanctuary. Small skulls along the route represent different stages of all three levels.

Cruise the wide open highway collecting brains, landing radical flips, and doing face plants, all to the tune of the hardcore rock ‘n roll soundtrack. It’s Chicago or bust!

Amazon Free App of the Day: Thumb Keyboard

Thumb Keyboard is available in the Amazon Appstore today, bringing a great keyboard alternative particularly useful if you frequently use a 7″ or 10.1″ Android tablet. Thumb Keyboard is well worth the normal $3.00 but for free, it really is a steal.

Thumb Keyboard offers a welcome solution to the uncomfortable stretching and juggling that often accompany thumb typing. This app has a keyboard layout to fit your needs, whether you’re typing on your phone or tablet.

Choose from seven different keyboard layouts with special accommodations for comfortable thumb-typing. Several layouts are designed specifically for Android phones, each ergonomically designed for fast and comfortable input. Innovative split layouts feature wider keys, better layout for thumb-typing in portrait mode, and increased accessibility to keys when typing in landscape mode. Split layouts for tablets and large-screen devices feature increased accessibility to keys for thumb-typing on 5-inch, 7.1-inch, 8.9-inch, and 10.1-inch tablets.

These layouts offer predefined combinations. You can also choose your own layout combination for portrait or landscape view.

Thumb Keyboard offers a whole heap of customizable features. Select your theme, background, keyboard height and width, secondary symbols, key size, font size, and keypress sound. You can also minimize or hide the keyboard; hide the right shift key; mark the two key blocks on the split keyboards with different colors; and access QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY keyboard layouts.
Other features include auto-correction, voice input (Android 2.2+, English only supported), a user dictionary, separate number keys and cursor keys in most layouts, fast switching between layouts, adjustable height (with separate adjustment of bottom bar), and easy popup keyboards (for additional characters, numbers, and smileys). Thumb Keyboard supports text prediction for numerous languages including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Dutch.

Thumb Keyboard also uses Bigam Prediction, an algorithm that helps you type faster by predicting what you want to say. The system looks at what you have already typed and how it is used in the context of the sentence, and then provides a best guess of what you’d like to say next. With this method, there’s no waiting around for your app to learn how you type. This feature will only work on Android 2.3 and Honeycomb.
