DigiTimes: Google Working With ASUS on Low Cost 7-Inch Android Tablet

According to a DigiTimes report, Google is working with Asustek (ASUS) to ship a 7-inch Android tablet. This new tablet could ship as early as May, with the business model following that of the successful Kindle Fire, with pricing at around $199 to $249. So why ASUS and not the likes of HTC? Sources say Google wanted control of the project and HTC insisted on directing development.

This new tablet will reportedly be the first to feature the Google Play Store.

While not the craziest rumor we’ve heard, DigiTimes has a spotty track record in the past, so take this one with a grain of salt. That being said, AndroidandMe had heard  that Google was working with ASUS on a Nexus tablet.

Makes sense right? Amazon has certainly proved there is tremendous interest in low-cost 7″ tablets and this will help Google drive people into the new Google Play Store.
