    Hi All,

Just wondering whether when you download and use a free app, do you sometimes click on ads that don't really interest you as a way of providing an income stream to the developer? I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts.
It's something I've occasionally done if I'm using a great free app that's really useful to me, as it makes me feel like I'm giving something back (though evidently it doesn't help the advertisers).

Honestly? No. If the apps are removable, they are gone.

If I understand the model used for ads in pay apps clicking on them as a form of thank you to the developer instead of genuine interest in the product does indeed make a small payment to the developer, but isn't it a bit of dishonesty to do it for that reason? I guess the sponser is the one who pays, even if it is a very small fee, but that is an expense for no reason other than to get the sponser to pay the developer for the app, not for the ad.

I guess the end result is similar to a sponser paying to place an ad, but that wasn't the way it was designed, is it? Maybe it was designed that way. I am not a developer and have no experience with this.

As a rule I never click on ads in apps. I have gone to developers sites and actually made donations for free apps I really found useful. Not all developers set up that donation ability though.

    Never.
I think developers should always provide a paid version alongside the free app. If we like the app and are willing to support the developer then we buy the paid version.

Can we ask you, as a developer have you ever made any money from ads included in applications?

Don't remember ever doing it intentionally. Have done it accidentally a couple of times.

    Hi Stevetaz,
I'm still in the early stages of game creation, here's my most recent free game, Jazzlebags AssGass which went live yesterday:

I've earned just a few dollars in ads so far and really like your idea of donations (something I do - tho not very often..). I think running a freebie alongside a paid version should work, but I'm still testing the water. I've only been developing games since December last year.

check out the free version here on Google Play, I hope you like.

I recently launched my first app on the market. I don't have many downloads yet (181) so I wouldn't draw too many conclusions based on these numbers. In the last 30 days I served up 14,704 adverts and made $2.09. A click is worth about $0.03-$0.04 to me. I have only ever made money on one day where nobody clicked an advert ($0.01).

But that said, those 181 downloads of the free version have only led to 2 downloads of the paid version, so right now I am making about as much money from adverts as I am from selling the paid version!

Interesting stats GeorgeUk. I am going to guess that was unexpected when you first jumped in? Do take a look at what I posted over at your app post thread. I hope that isn't causing low downloads for you.

I am pretty sure I am just having a bad afternoon and it is me.....

I am a little disappointed with the download numbers. For some reason I thought that giving something away for free (albeit with adverts) would be easy! I wasn't expecting to make my millions as an app developer, but I thought I would be able to cover my costs (currently about £300), and make enough to buy any hardware I need if people report defects on specific devices. I have a feeling that things will start to pick up, recently I have seen a bit of a jump in downloads.

actually developers earn by including ads into their apps. And when you click on ads, developer got some cents. :)

    Hey - Good question there

Firstly, my name is Chandler and I work at SendDroid.

Speaking personally, the only time that I have ever clicked on any ad is if I was actually interested in the content of the ad. Otherwise, I really do not click. There are occasions when the clicks are accidental though.

Like stevetaz said, the payment model is a bit more complex than just paying the Developer on clicks. You do indeed cost the Advertiser a small fee if they're running on CPC. While 1 click doesn't cause a chaos, I'd be highly disturbed if this became a regular practice for users.

You can always show your gratitude by paying the Developer separately. :)

I do click if a game / app is good. For example for admob each click is +/- 1 cent for dev. Support free apps!

sincerely yes, 'cause lots of developers have done an effort to take out the app, so if it does not cost me anything, I click at least one time, is like giving thanks in a forum! :D
