Advice/Help with Rooting?

    Hi everyone. I have an LG Optimus (LG-VM107) running android 2.3.4, and am interested in rooting it. I have been reading up on doing this but with so much info and options out there I am not sure what I need to do exactly, or what order to do it in. Can anyone tell me what steps I should take? Also, I read that you should back up your phone first but when looking into this found that a complete back up requires your phone to be rooted?? And, what would be the best rom for me to have when I do this?

    I may be a little overly careful as this is my only phone at the moment. But I am tired of poor battery life and pre-installed apps running even though I am always closing and force-closing these apps that I have never used and don't want. :-P
