T-Mobile G1 G1 "other" email program + why gmail won't down load?

Good day. I have been using the "other" email program to down load (and send) email from my website server. It's been on my Outlook for many years. It works fine downloading (the setup is amazingly easy). It's querky when deleting (sometimes deletes and pops up next message, sometimes deletes and goes back to INBOX. The real problem is - I cannot delete the trash messages even though the manual (yes, I read the manual). I press delete, it says : "message deleted" but they're not. When it gets too full, I wipe the whole deal clean and have to reinstall my email info. Any ideas?

My gmail worked when I first got the phone, now it's not downloading the mail - I had it grab the emails from the same server so it's combining my gmail and my other account - but works endlessly and never download and I can't get into it to drop the other account... ???
