Manually install officially Froyo 2.2 on your DROID 1

droid+froyo

So you’re still rocking 2.1? Google has finally ended the wait for your frozen dessert. No longer do we have to use ROM’s to get the some-what real deal (although I still will be using them).

The official file, direct from Google’s servers, allows users to not have to wait for their OTA update. This only works if your phone is Android 2.1, and not on some crazy ROM or rooted. If you’re still not sure if you should unroot for the official update, join our discussion on the matter.

Here are the exact steps that forum-goers LarryR and NickMili have created to manually install 2.2 on the Motorola Droid:

  1. Download the official Android 2.2 firmware from: Android 2.2 (FRG01B)
  2. Copy the file to your microSD card and name it update.zip (newb warning: not update.zip.zip)
  3. Power off your phone. Hold down the “X” button on the physical keyboard and power it back on to boot into recovery mode.
  4. When you see the “/!\” symbol, press volume up and the camera button to display the recovery options.
  5. Use the d-pad to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
  6. When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.
  7. Great success!

Apparently, Flash 20.1 is not appearing in the market yet for Droid 2.2 users. Can rooted and OTA updated/Manually updated comment on this to see if it has anything to do with your updates.

Did you receive your OTA update? When(please)? Or did you have to do it the above way? Leave your thoughts and comment below.

On my rom atleast, you hit the individual application and check the box to auto-download future updates. It will fetch every x, editable in settings.

  9. tr1cky says:

Warning this will void your warranty. Its the official version but not the official build. Thanks. I’m being patient ota is the best and sure way. This is a leak of the test build all improvements are final in ota

  12. Kage says:

GReat! Now what the heck do I do. I just got it to install NOW I find out it’s bad :( How do I get it off my phone now?????

  13. Lenny says:

Worked good. rojajobe just rename the files “update” if you rename it as “update.zip” then the phone will read it as “update.zip.zip”. also i was running “anti virus free” which made the phone extremely slow. i had to uninstall it to even make sense of anything. USB tethering works great

  14. tony says:

does 2.2 seem to slow brower down and harm the service

    • Bob Dobbs says:

yes.. that is the primary goal of the software update. It is there to make your experience less than desirable and to significantly shorten the life of your hardware.

  15. Mr. Awesome says:

Um… Guys.. What the heck did you make me put on my phone!!?? I rebooted it and it has an apple logo!!! Why is my phone an iphone now!!!!????

  16. Mr. D says:

Worked good for me. Easy install.

If you have a file manager, you can download the file right to your phone, move it to SDcard root folder, rename it and install without having to hook up to a PC.

  17. Carter says:

Ive heard that this isnt the final build. Will our phones still get an OTA if weve already manually updated it?

  18. Craig says:

Works like a champ and is stupid easy. No issues.

  19. chris says:

I manually installed frg01b, will I still get OTA so I can get official release

  20. Larry says:

Patience is a virtue. HOLD OFF for the OTA unless risk turns you on. There were reasons Verizon halted the first OTA. A fool and his phone are soon bricked.

  21. alex says:

I can get to the triangle screen, but that’s it. No volume up, down, camera button combination works >.<

  22. brett says:

Alex, hold the volume up button then tap the camera button.

  23. clearsam,Chicago, IL says:

    i get (status 7) error

anybody has a solution for this please?

  24. Rex D. says:

Updated manually from this articles link on 8/7/10. Updated my phone and my partners phone. His has worked okay, mine has not. Freeze-ups to numerous to count, had to remove battery at least 45 times in first 24 hours to restart phone. Gallery does not show any of my videos. Lost about half the pics on my SD card. Had to eventually do a HARD RESET then re-install all my apps etc, which still didn’t fix the problem. Ordered a new phone yesterday via an insurance claim, but TODAY my phone seems to be working better, has not locked up even once. Videos still not showing in the Gallery at all. Battery is draining extremely fast too. I don’t keep a whole lot of apps in my phone… maybe it’s Facebook still?? Don’t really see anything in the update to make it worth the trouble. The browser is a little better, pphone seems slightly faster/more responsive. Now I wonder if I should keep it and return the one coming in the mail running 2.1 (insurance claim)

  25. Dom says:

I followed the steps, however it did not install for me. I got the /!\ screen, scrolled to sdcard:update.zip, and initiated.

It ran a few lines, then said Installation aborted. Help?

  26. clearsam,Chicago, IL says:

for those till getting error (status 7)

    i did install this: 9046f5a3ec09.signed-voles-ota-45394.zip

it is a larger file but seems to work finr and update to FroYo from almost all previous 2.x versions.

    • Mark, Cincinnati OH says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! i did a google search for that file, found it, downloaded, and was updated within a few minutes!!!!

      2.2 froyo is mine!

      • Wil says:

X2!!! Have had that “error status 7″ for weeks and had almost given up! So glad I saw this thread. That file worked like a champ!!! Be sure you remane it to “update.zip” first! Thanks so much!

  27. Droid user says:

Thanks for the software. It works perfectly!

I’m sure that this version does not include ALL features as the ORIGINAL one right?

Also, can I still be able to update to the ORIGINAL Froyo 2.2 when it officially comes out sometimes this month?

  28. halamazoo says:

I received the update yesterday (8/11), but my wife, who got her phone the same time I did, hasn’t received it yet. I manually updated her phone using the instructions above. Her update seems a little buggier than mine, but that could be that she hasn’t kept her phone as squeaky clean as mine. Thanks.

  29. User says:

I am attempting to update now, but I keep running into the same issue. It says it fails verification. Not a clue what’s happening.

  30. daniel jaso says:

wow, this is the best installed flawlessly and actually improved all the applications i use the most. it even puts tabs next to the menu for taking pictures, browser is faster, and its just groovy man!

  31. Matthew Billy says:

Glad almost all of you are enjoying it!
If you follow the instructions word for word, there should be no problem at all, I have done this many times to make sure that it actually works, and I haven’t found a single problem.

    • Derrick says:

Why is it that every time i do this it comes up with ” Signature verification failed” -I was rooted, but uprooted and now I’m on stock 2.1. Please offer any advise you can???

  32. David says:

After I install this update, can I remove the zip file and froyo remain on my phone.

  33. Casey says:

How would you roll this back?

  34. Fred says:

Ok so i followed the steps, went into boot recovery and updated the .zip and it said sucessful…..but after it boots….everything is the same…

  35. Storm says:

Worked great. Now anyone have the manual on what’s different or know where to get an overview??

    Thanks guys…

    SN

  36. Eric says:

Manually downloading it will NOT void warrenty.

  37. Vzw Tech says:

As long as you Phone info matches the following in the “About Phone Section” it is the official update:

Go to Settings > About Phone:

    Android Version: 2.2
    Baseband Version: C_01.43.01P
    Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-g103d848
    android-build@apa26 #1
    Build Number: FRG01B

If everything there matches your Droid 1 info, then you have the OFFICIAL “Froyo” 2.2 Update for Android.

If you manually download the .zip and place it in your root folder of the SD card, your phone will not be notified about the 2.2 update. Meaning, the phone will inform the msg that you already have the 2.2 update, so your phone will not be ask to download the OTA version. BUT, if there is a FRG22 update, your phone will automatically load it like it usually does. (FRG01B Update is the only so far that asks your permission to download, via OTA)

Hope this helps everyone that has iffy thoughts.

  41. jack off says:

hey doesnt this update drain out your battery? i have the moto droid and the files to update but not sure if this update will kill my battery.. oO

  42. David says:

I have manually installed Froyo about 2 weeks ago. Now I am getting it from Verizon. How do I cancel the install from Verizon?

  43. Matthew Billy says:

    glad it helped!
