Samsung Executive Finds Current Galaxy Tab 10.1 parts ‘inadequate’ compared to iPad 2

Plenty has been said about the release of the iPad 2 and how it stacks up to the current crop of Android tablets and those coming later this year. It appears that Samsung might be looking to make changes to their Galaxy Tab 10.1 hardware and perhaps look at the pricing model, according to Samsung VP Lee Don-Joo. Referring to the forthcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1, Don-Joo exclaimed that “we have to improve the parts that are inadequate” and continued to say, “Apple made it very thin“, commenting on the iPad 2.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

There are specifications where Galaxy Tab 10.1 bests the iPad 2. It offers a higher resolution display (1280 x 800 pixels versus the iPad’s 1024 x 768), stereo speakers vs mono and an 8-megapixel camera vs 1 megapixel on the iPad 2.

It seems Don-Joo is talking less about component specs and more specifically about about thinness and price. “The 10-inch (tablet) was to be priced higher than the 7-inch (tablet) but we will have to think that over,” said Lee. If Samsung could nail both of those, they’d not only fare better against the iPad 2, but also the Motorola Xoom. While refreshing and honest, quotes singing the praises of your competitors certainly does not help matters.

  1. This is clearly a trolling news story, passed around by the likes of Engadget, so I’ll be taking this with a VERY big pinch of salt!

What I suspect Samsung are ACTUALLY talking about, is the pricing, in which case, this is a good thing, pricing the new Tab competitively with the competition.

These are direct quotes from a Samsung executive. As mentioned in the article, pricing and thinness are where they might make changes. Changes to a major tablet release is news. If the iPad 2 makes Samsung offer up better, lower-cost tablets, we all win.

      • In the same vein as the last set of “quotes” or should I say “mis-quotes” from a Samsung executive? I suspect that sites like Engadget have taken this and turned it into something negative towards the Galaxy Tab. I agree, pricing changes is good for everyone, and looking at pricing, versus the competition, is smart business.

I checked the original source (linked above) before posting and these quotes were certainly attributed to him.

As I mentioned, if they can nail price and thinness, it will put them in a good position. Having used the Xoom for a few weeks, thinness is one thing I’d love to see from Samsung.
